Idle Limiter

After many years involvement in the automotive industry, aide automotive understands the high costs associated with running a fleet and the extent to which long idle times and the resultant fuel consumption and engine wear contribute to this. We also know that vehicle emissions are a major cause of atmospheric pollution.

With many cities becoming LEZ (low emission zones), idling of buses and trucks while waiting for passengers or delivering goods has been earmarked as a concern to the local air quality, many suggestions have been made to carry out enforcement on this issue. Recently California and New Jersey in the US have passed legislation requiring heavy-duty trucks to idle no more than 5 minutes. The major benefit of limiting engine idle time is fuel economy. If a vehicle idles 50 percent of the time there is a 10 percent hit on fuel economy. An engine that idles at 650 to 700 rpms uses a half gallon of fuel per hour.

A study has suggested that school buses found idling for more than just three minutes are actually generating more pollution than stopping and re-starting the engine.

The Idle Limiter assists in saving fuel, minimising engine wear and decreasing CO2 emissions by shutting an engine down after a preset number of minutes of idling.
